About 3-4 times a year, Masscribes brings in expert instructors to hold day-long and weekend-long art workshops. Teaching artists come from all over New England, the United States and on occasion from other countries to share what they've learned and to help pull our skills up a few notches--genuinely and without holding back. Calligraphers tend to be generous by nature and the teachers are no exception. They're so passionate in what they do that you couldn't get them to hold back on tips & tricks if you tried!
Workshop offerings have included lettering of all sorts from traditional to modern in a myriad of different hands (styles) from Victorian script to gothic blackletter and everything in between. And to add additional layers of beauty to your lettering, we offer workshops in the related arts such as gilding, bookbinding, pastepaper-making, color theory, miniature paintings.... The workshops vary in their pre-requisite levels of experience so there is something for everyone!

After studying the studio arts in college, graphic design was my profession for 30 years. I now use those tools to translate ideas into fine art. An enthusiastic artist, designer, and photographer, I believe that the practice of "art" is a total experience of body, mind and spirit. 26 Seeds: A Year-Long Workshop with Reggie Ezell - CLASS IS FULL March 10 & 11, April 28 & 29, June 16 & 17, Aug 11 & 12, Oct 6 & 7, Dec 15 & 16 The year long course is an extended sequence of classes that offer continuity in the fundamentals of calligraphy: a structured development of letter forms, integrating materials, techniques, and design. The intent of the course is not simply to copy sets of alphabets or produce some finished works to then "show". Instead of being an end in themselves the letterforms and works are means to acquiring specific skills of hand, eye, mind, and judgment. This enables students to analyze and synthesize any set of forms, mode of design or format, use of material or technique, and ultimately enable them to generate letters which are personal and appropriate visual expressions that interpret and amplify the spirit of a text. Presented simultaneously with letterforms are a variety of materials, techniques, formats and design which expose students to possibilities they may never have had access to before. It places within the grasp of their mind and hand the reality of "disciplined freedom." Visit Reggie Ezell at www.reggieezell.com |
