This class will concentrate on creating many varieties of Versal Capitals - including pen-made, drawn and painted, and historiated. This bold, graphic, contemporary alphabet was invented by Rudolph Koch in the 1920's. Its density and legibility made it ideal for posters and movie titling.

After learning the foundations of Neuland, students will experiment with stretching, stacking, shadowing, and layering this versatile alphabet. The mass and texture these letters create on a page are a perfect compliment and serve as a contrast to lighter calligraphic hands. Neuland is fun and an ideal alphabet for many applications.

We start with the most basic components of broad-edged pen lettering: pen angle, letter slope and pen scale, to be sure each student has a thorough understanding of how the letters are formed. Once armed with that knowledge, moving on to other lettering styles becomes a much easier task.

Rare Books and Calligraphy - ENDED

This is a first-time offering of a combination class - on Friday we'll meet at the BPL Rare Books Room to view some beautiful illuminated manuscripts from the middle ages and Renaissance. (*Please note library meeting time will be shorter than the 8:30 to 4:30 classroom time at NBSS.)

Using these manuscripts as inspiration, participants will meet on Saturday and Sunday at North Bennett Street School for a weekend workshop to create a manuscript page.
